Tiered Pricing

With Tiered Pricing, you can offer your customers a greater discount when they buy more items from you. The more they buy, the less they pay. Tiered pricing operates by setting up preset ideals for thresholds. Once a shopper reaches a specific buy quantity threshold, they then will be eligible for lower pricing.

Another thing about flat-rate pricing is that it can very easily alienate shoppers. If a shopper sees your pricing and immediately determines they can’t afford it, they’re quickly going to look elsewhere. Whereas, if you implement tiered pricing, it brings you opportunities to further establish the value behind your product and prompt visitors to make a purchase.

Benefits of Tiered Pricing

For customers, one of the advantages of tiered pricing is the increased level of various choices they have available. For the e-commerce owner, it allows you to provide extra options that help to boost your overall bottom line for your e-commerce business.

As a store owner, the wonderful asset you can have to your disposable is regular customers. When you have a stream of regular shoppers (and then consistent revenue. And if you’re considering increasing capital from banks or investors, having increased shoppers’ lifetime value through repeat purchases is a smart way to showcase the abilities of your business to those who might be interested in investing in it.

Moreover, tiered pricing also helps you win your competition. If you’re trying to provide the same products as other vendors, you also need to find a way to differentiate yourself from everyone else. Tiered pricing can be a great way to do this.

In fact, tiered pricing doesn’t work for all business types. It really relies on what products or services you provide. Tiered pricing strategies work effectively where your items are seen as necessities and where the price reduction as the unit tiers go up becomes a great deal. You can consider products that customers have to purchase in order to do another thing. Those item lines work well for tiered pricing. See more benefits that Tiered pricing offers:

  • Encourage customers who may be unable to afford standard-priced packages
  • Leaves room to upgrade when they’re satisfied with the service or their requirements expand
  • Ability to align the value you provide with the amounts customers pay.

Tiered pricing vs. Volume pricing

Tiered pricing vs. Volume pricing

It’s easy to puzzle between tiered pricing with volume pricing because both relate to providing shoppers a discount for buying more of a product. Where tiered pricing gives customers discounts for hitting certain buying milestones, volume pricing is a flat discount given for buying a bulk amount. For example, an online store divided shoes into three price tiers:

  • Tier 1: 1-20 shoes cost $10 per shirt.
  • Tier 2: 21-30 shoes cost $9 per shirt.
  • Tier 3: 31 shoes or more cost $8 per shirt.

When customers purchase 35 shirts:

  • If the online store use Tiered pricing:
    • The first 20 shoes are billed at $10, the total cost is $200
    • 21-30 are billed at $9, total cost: $90
    • 31-35 are billed at $8, total cost: $40
      => Total cost: $330
  • Using Volume pricing:  All 35 shirts are billed at 8 => Total costs: $280

Both volume pricing and tiered pricing are great ways to attract more new customers through the door. At the same time, they incentivize your shoppers to purchase more with every transaction. The strategies that work effectively for you depend on your goals, marginal costs, and whether or not you have the opportunity to utilize upsells.
